Ross and Mary Whipple pledged $1.5 million to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, and a portion of that is going to support orthopedics, according to a Dec. 19 news release.
A total of $250,000 is going to The Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital at UAMS. That donation was made in gratitude to C. Lowry Barnes, MD, chair of the orthopedics department, and Robert Martin, MD, a foot and ankle surgeon.
"I was fortunate to be treated by Dr. Barnes and Dr. Martin, and I wanted to show my respect to them in appreciation of the quality of care I received," Ross Whipple said in the release. "We were also impressed by The Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital, which is a truly amazing facility with well-trained staff."
One million dollars of the pledge will establish the Ross and Mary Whipple Family Community Outreach and Engagement Fund for Excellence in the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. And the remaining $250,000 will establish the Nancy "Jo" Smith Special Services Fund for Excellence.
