Rothman Orthopaedic Institute will have to pay its share of former Philadelphia Eagles captain Chris Maragos' $43.5 million verdict, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Sept. 3.
Mr. Maragos received the verdict in February 2023. He sued UPMC and a physician over alleged "improper care" for a 2018 knee injury that affected his NFL career.
A Superior Court found a jury didn't make an error when it found Rothman, whose physicians were involved with treating Mr. Maragos' knee, negligent, the report said. Rothman's share of the verdict is about $14.3 million.
Rothman previously asked for a new trial, but in an Aug. 30 filing a judge rejected the argument, the Inquirer reported. An appeals court also rejected Rothman's argument that the verdict was "excessive."
In June, Rothman ended its relationship with the Eagles over future malpractice risk.
"We acknowledge the court's decision released late last week," according to a Sept. 3 statement from Rothman, "Our legal team is carefully reviewing the ruling, and we are currently considering our next steps. At this moment, we have no further comment."
