Smith+Nephew recently became the latest major orthopedics company to announce layoffs in 2024, sharing plans to cut 150 jobs in Memphis, Tenn.
Here are five additional major layoffs from the year:
1. Medtronic laid off 44 employees from its Carlsbad, Calif., facility, according to an April 25 WARN notice. The WARN notice took effect May 19.
2. Zimmer Biomet laid off 3% of its workforce as part of a global restructuring that is expected to save the company $200 million by 2025.
3. Latham-based OrthopedicsNY laid off 34 employees, according to a WARN notice. The layoffs took effect May 1.
4. NuVasive laid off 157 employees at its San Diego headquarters, according to California WARN notice data. The permanent layoffs went into effect March 3.
5. Rothman Orthopaedic Institute laid off 5% of its workforce. The move came as Rothman "continues to navigate the challenges and opportunities of a post-pandemic healthcare environment. Inflation, healthcare labor, and other costs of providing medical care are growing faster than reimbursement for healthcare services." The layoff process began Jan. 8.
