Alexandria, La.-based Rapides Regional Medical Center completed its first wireless, handheld robotic total knee replacement in the state, TV station WNTZ Fox 48 reported Oct. 1.

Orthopedic surgeon Timmothy Randell, MD, completed the procedure using Think Surgical's  Tmini miniature robotic system. The system is a wireless, handheld device that uses CT scans to guide orthopedic surgeons in performing precise total knee replacements.

Rapides CEO Vernon Jones praised the debut of the new technology in the report.

"Our patients deserve the most advanced tools available," Mr. Jones said. "We are proud to be the only hospital in Louisiana offering this technology, and we thank Dr. Randell for his role in building our outpatient orthopedic program."
