Dr. G. Dean MacEwen dies at 96

G. Dean MacEwen, MD, a pioneer in pediatric orthopedic surgery, died at 96, according to an Aug. 16 obituary published in Delaware Online.

Dr. MacEwen first began practicing in 1958, joining Wilmington, Del.-based Nemours Children’s Hospital. 

Over the next 30 years, he developed and made modifications to devices for the treatment of scoliosis and congenital hip dysplasia

He also established screening protocols for hip dysplasia in newborns and scoliosis in children.

He was also a charter member and president of several key orthopedic societies, including the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America and the Scoliosis Research Society.

After he retired from Nemours Children’s in 1987, Dr. MacEwen continued working at the Children’s Hospital in New Orleans and later joined St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.
