Here are 14 notable layoffs that have taken place at orthopedic and spine companies since 2019:

2024

1. Medtronic laid off 44 employees from its Carlsbad, Calif., facility in May. 

2. Latham-based OrthopedicsNY laid off 34 of its 582 employees.

3. NuVasive announced the layoff of 157 employees at its San Diego headquarters in January.

4. Rothman Orthopaedic Institute laid off 5% of its workforce. 

5. Zimmer Biomet laid off 3% of its back office workforce as part of a global restructuring in February.

2023

1. Stryker announced plans to lay off more than 500 employees by the end of December as it closed its Lakeland, Fla. facility.

2. Former spine and bone solution manufacturer ZimVie laid off 5 percent of its global workforce after seeing a 4.1 percent dip in sales during the first quarter of the year, resulting in a $30 million net loss. 

2022

1. Tampa-based Shriners Hospitals for Children laid off most of the staff at its outpatient orthopedic hospital after closing the facility in 2022.

2. Stryker laid off 88 employees from its Lakeland, Fla., production facility.

2021

1. Stryker had its first round of layoffs Dec. 31 affecting 26 jobs as part of the process of closing its Lakeland, Fla., production facility.

2020

1. Clearwater-based Florida Spine Institute and its surgery center laid off 62 employees and suspended operations due to mounting economic difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

2. Exactech laid off 54 employees at its Gainesville, Fla., headquarters and nine at its Sarasota, Fla., office, because of a rash of surgery cancellations amid the COVID-19 crisis.

3. Missoula (Mont.) Bone & Joint laid off more than 50 of its 200-plus employees. 

2019

1. Medtronic announced a second wave of layoffs affecting 100 jobs at its Santa Rosa, Calif., facility.
