Washington hospital installs robot for knee, hip replacements

Olympia, Wash.-based Capital Medical Center recently installed the Mako robotic system for hip and knee replacements, reports Thurston Talk.

Three things to know:

1. The Mako system allows surgeons to preoperatively plan procedures with 3D imaging and assists with implant placement.

2. Developed by Stryker, the Mako system costs about $1 million.

3. The device is designed to protect soft tissue and ligaments from damage.
