Keith Meister, MD, is set to perform elbow surgery on Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Alek Manoah, according to a June 11 report by CBS Sports.
The surgery is a hybrid internal brace procedure to repair a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in Mr. Manoah's right elbow. The brace procedure is an alternative to traditional Tommy John surgery.
Mr. Manaoh will miss the rest of the 2024 MLB season and is expected to miss a significant portion of the 2025 season, according to team manager John Schneider.
The typical recovery for an internal brace procedure is often shorter than the expected 12 to 18 months for Tommy John surgery, the report said.
Dr. Meister is the director of sports medicine at the Texas Metroplex Institute for Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery in Arlington and is the head team physician for the Texas Rangers.
