Midland-based West Texas Orthopedics has become the first practice in the area to add Iovera treatment to assist in chronic knee pain and post-op pain control for patients undergoing total knee replacement, according to a May 1 report from MRT.com.
Iovera is a non-opioid pain relief procedure that utilizes cold to block peripheral nerve receptors that would cause pain. It is clinically proven to provide relief for up to 90 days after the procedure and helps reduce the need for pain medication.
Iovera can be performed three weeks before undergoing a total knee replacement to decrease post-operative pain and improve functional outcomes. It can be performed every 90 days if needed, and takes place in an office without sedation or an IV.
