Howard University orthopedic residency program loses accreditation

Orthopedic

Howard University in Washington, D.C., lost accreditation for its orthopedic residency program due to a resident complaint, Howard University News Service reported.

The university lost its accreditation effective Feb. 21 but is under appeal, the March 5 report said. If the decision isn't appealed, the 19 orthopedic residents at Howard will go to different accredited programs in June.

Robert Wilson, MD, interim orthopedic residency director told the publication that withdrawal was related to problems that developed in the program.

"We had some structural issues, as many residencies do," he told the publication. "Sometimes you need to do a certain amount of surgeries, or you have to have a certain number of doctors who teach. We're the only HBCU program in the country. We don’t always have all the resources that we need like many other places."

Andrea Hayes Dixon, MD, dean of Howard University's college of medicine said an appeal is in progress but didn't tell Howard University News Service why the orthopedic program lost accreditation.
