OrthoArizona surgeon performs 1st automated hexapod deformity correction

Orthopedic

Phoenix-based OrthoArizona has become the first facility in the state to perform an automated hexapod deformity correction.

Foot and ankle specialist David Jaffe, MD, performed the procedure on a patient who suffered burns on the majority of her body and was told she might never walk again, according to an Aug. 18 OrthoArizona blog post.

Dr. Jaffe determined that the patient needed a gradual correction with an external fixator. He mounted the external fixator with the mounted AutoStrut robotic correction system, and over the course of two months the automated struts corrected her deformity.

After two months, the devices were removed and the patient can now walk totally unassisted, according to the release.
