13 orthopedic surgeons and physicians making headlines in 2023


A surgeon from Texas debuting new shoulder reconstruction technology and 12 other orthopedic professionals making headlines since Jan. 5:

1. Robert Cunningham, MD, completed the first surgery in Colorado's Vail Valley with the bridge-enhanced ACL restoration, or BEAR, procedure.

2. Twenty-two physicians with Atlanta-based Resurgens Orthopaedics were named as top doctors for 2023 by Castle Connolly.

3. Keith Meister, MD, completed the elbow surgery of Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story on Jan. 9 at the Texas Metroplex Institute in Arlington.

4. April Armstrong, MD, was named vice president for orthopedics at Hershey, Pa.-based Penn State Health Medical Group.

5. Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill., appointed Jeffrey Goldstein, MD, as its new chair of the department of orthopedic surgery.

6. Howard Harris, MD, a surgeon at Texas Orthopedic Specialists in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, collaborated with arthroplasty innovator FX Shoulder Solutions to debut new shoulder reconstruction technology. 

7. Hanna "Johnny" Mitias, MD, owner of New Albany, Miss.-based Mitias Orthopaedics, agreed to pay $1.8 million to resolve allegations of submitting false claims to Medicare and Medicaid.

8. Wade Johnson, MD, a sports medicine physician and director of sports medicine at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, Minn., will serve as the official physician for the U.S. alpine ski team at the World Cup.

9. Dr. Dror Paley, an orthopedic surgeon and owner of the Paley Institute in West Palm Beach, Fla., launched a clinic in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. 

10. Orthopedic surgeon James DeVellis, MD, was arrested in Florida on accusations he abused patients during checkups and procedures.

11. An orthopedic surgeon with Madison, Wis.-based UW Health has been sanctioned after a patient died during shoulder surgery.

12. Robert Eberhart, MD, of Portsmouth, N.H.-based Atlantic Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, retired after 36 years in the profession.

13. Orthopedic surgeon Marc Matarazzo, MD, joined the Center for Bone and Joint Surgery in Jupiter and Port St. Lucie, Fla.
