University of Iowa constructing $525.6M orthopedic hospital

Iowa City-based University of Iowa is building an orthopedic hospital set to open in 2025, The Gazette reported Jan. 4.

Four things to know:

1. University of Iowa's orthopedics chair Larry Marsh, MD, said in a 2022 review email that "In 2025, we will move the [orthopedic]  department to a new musculoskeletal hospital in North Liberty (Iowa)," The Gazette reported.

2. The hospital will sit on a 60-acre plot of land and will have a floor for education, an administrative floor and labs. A gait lab will also be included to assess how patients walk and run.

3. The 469,050 square-foot facility is expected to cost $525.6 million.

4. The move to an orthopedics hospital stemmed from a growth in volume, according to UIHC's 2016 proposal to relocate services.
