Common cervical disc replacement complications: 5 notes

Spine

Migration was among the top reasons cervical disc replacements needed revisions, according to a study in the Oct. 15 issue of Spine.

Five things to know:

1. Researchers used the FDA's Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience database to analyze data from cervical disc replacement cases from January 2005 to September 2023. All nine FDA-approved cervical disc replacement devices were included.

2. A total of 678 revision cases were reported. The three devices that saw the most revisions were Mobi-C (239), M6 (167), Prodisc-C (88).

3. The most common complications were migration for seven of the nine devices.

4. The most common complications associated with the M6 disc were osteolysis and neck pain.

5. Neck pain was the most common reason for revision with the Simplify disc.
