The best approach for CBA spine fusion: Study

Spine

Using a cellular bone allograft yielded high lumbar spinal fusion rates across anterior, lateral, and posterior surgical approaches, according to a study published in the July 2024 issue of the International Journal of Spine Surgery.

Researchers analyzed fusion status for 252 patients who had interbody fusion with CBA. After 12 months overall fusion success rates were 98.1% with the anterior approach, 100% for the lateral approach and 97.9% for the posterior approach. After two years the overall fusion success rate for fusion success was 97.9%, 100.0%, and 98.8% for anterior, lateral, and posterior approaches, respectively.

The study concluded, "CBA represents an attractive alternative to autograft alone, reporting a high rate of successful fusion and clinical outcomes across various surgical approaches."
