Carbondale-based Southern Illinois Healthcare Brain and Spine Institute has earned a $50,000 technology grant, according to a May 29 report from the Southern Illinoisan.
The grant was given to the spine institute by the SIH Auxiliary and will be used to purchase a transcranial doppler.
The ultrasound device can look at blood vessels inside a person's head to assess damage from a stroke, aneurism or other brain injury. The noninvasive device will allow patients to seek care locally without being referred to physicians outside of the area, the report said.
There is no official date for the transcranial doppler to arrive at the hospital.
