Inspired Spine opens 2 centers of excellence for high BMI patients

Spine

Burnsville, Minn.-based Inspired Spine has established two Centers of Excellence in rural areas of Kansas and Minnesota that specialize in providing complex spine care for patients with a high body mass index.

Neurosurgeon Hamid Abbasi, MD, PhD, recently traveled to the facility in Hutchinson, Kan., to perform 11 spine surgeries in two days at the new facility.

Five of the patients Dr. Abbasi operated on had a BMI of over 40, with the highest BMIs being 54 and 64. All 11 procedures were executed with unprecedented success, and patients were walking and back to their own homes within two days, according to a Nov. 29 press release.

Patients with BMIs over 40 have historically faced challenges when seeking elective spine surgeries, with physicians recommending against the procedures, citing high risks.

Inspired Spine's oblique lateral lumbar interbody fusion technology and comprehensive surgical protocols have minimized associated risks for patients requiring spinal fusion surgery.

The OLLIF procedure has been used to treat high BMI patients for the last decade.
