1st pedicle screw placed using Novarad AR technology in the US

Spine

Bradley Moatz, MD, has placed the first ever pedicle screw using Novarad's immersive augmented reality on a live patient in the U.S.

Dr. Moatz performed the procedure at Baltimore-based MedStar Union Hospital using Novarad's VisAR augmented reality surgical navigation system, according to a July 26 press release.

The VisAR system utilizes augmented reality with optical tracking technology, providing surgeons with an interactive 3D navigation by projecting the patient's 3D volume imaging over their body.

VisAR is currently FDA-approved for spinal surgery and has other FDA approvals pending.

It utilizes real-time 3D rendering of images on the headset and allows physicians to collaborate virtually by sharing image data between headsets.

VisAR minimizes procedure invasiveness, reduces the risk of complications and expedites patient recovery, according to the release.
