Detroit police are investigating the death of a neurosurgeon who worked at Ascension St. John Hospital, ABC News reported April 25.

Police responded to a well-being check April 23 when they found Devon Hoover, MD, fatally shot. Investigators couldn't confirm Tuesday if the shooting was targeted, ABC affiliate WXYZ reported April 25.

Dr. Hoover specialized in neck and back disorders. A former patient who saw him in 2007 told WXYZ that Dr. Hoover helped her keep her ability to walk after suffering spine pain.

"I respect him," she said. "I thank him because my life in the last 15 years could've been way different without him. And he kept me moving for my kids, now for my grandson, so he's changed my life."

Another past patient said Dr. Hoover treated his degenerative disc disease and said the neurosurgeon had a kind bedside manner.

"Those three days in the hospital, he'd come in the morning to check on you, call you after your discharge to check on you," he told WXYZ. "You just don't see that anymore."

An arrest hasn't yet been made.

A spokesperson for St. Louis-based Ascension said in an April 26 email to Becker's that Dr. Hoover was "a dedicated and well respected member of the Ascension Michigan family."

"Our sincerest condolences and heartfelt prayers are with his family, friends and fellow associates during this incredibly difficult time," the statement said.

This is a developing story.
