Orthofix to push 7D Flash navigation into ASCs

Spinal Tech

The next step for Orthofix's 7D Flash navigation for spine is outpatient, CEO Massimo Calafiore said in an Aug. 6 earnings call.

Earlier this year Orthofix reshuffled its commercial structure so 7D Flash navigation would be under the leadership of the spine team, Mr. Calafiore said, as transcribed by Seeking Alpha. The move helped the system work as a growth asset for the spine segment.

Now Orthofix is looking to ASCs as an area to grow 7D Flash. The navigation system uses visible light for imaging rather than radiation and can register in seconds.

"The ambulatory surgery center market for 7D is also of interest to us, since some spine surgery procedures have been slowly moving into the ASC settings," Mr. Calafiore said. "We believe the 7D system is well positioned for [minimally invasive surgery] procedures in the ASC, with a small relative footprint, efficient workflow and pricing. Although still in the very early stage, we've been able to gain some initial experience in the ASC, with a few accounts where we have placed a 7D system. With the evolution of our 7D strategy, we are more confident than ever in its increasingly significant role in our portfolio."

Mr. Calafiore said he sees the 7D Flash system as being "fundamental" to sustainable growth.

"I've said multiple times, 7D is a unique technology that really creates a differentiable experience in the OR and all of this is translating and is for us to bring more surgeons on board," he said. "At the same time, from the [research and development] perspective, we are very excited about what we can do with 7D. There's going to be a very focused investment on 2025 and beyond."
