SINTX Technologies has earned a $1.97 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop a 3D-printed composite silicon nitride-polyetheretherketone spinal implant..
This is the fourth NIH grant SINTX has earned since receiving a phase 1 award in September 2021, according to an Oct. 11 news release. About 40 percent of spine implants are PEEK-based devices because of their proven clinical efficacy.
SINTX plans to spend the next 24 months collaborating with the Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine on 3D-printed versions of the implant.
Upon the execution of phase 2 of the project, SINTX will have the majority of the data needed to earn FDA 510(k) clearance, according to the report.
