University of Alabama at Birmingham adds spine robot

Robotics

The University of Alabama Birmingham added the ExcelsiusGPS spine robot, according to an Aug. 22 news release.

The hospital is the only one in the city to use the robot. It was added on the heels of the hospital's milestone 20,000 total robotic procedures, which was surpassed earlier this year.

Jake Godzik, MD, is one of the surgeons trained to use the robot.

"Spine surgery is incredibly precise, with many of our targets being half a centimeter wide, and there is little to no tolerance for error," Dr. Godzik said in the release. "Using the robotic techniques does not revolutionize what we do, but it allows an experienced team to be more precise and consistent and even tackle more complex surgeries."
