A general surgeon at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, Wis., has performed the clinic's 1,000th robotic surgery, according to an Aug. 14 report from the La Crosse Tribune.

The clinic performs 80 robotic surgeries a month on average, with 13 physicians in orthopedics, urology, gynecology and general surgery trained to perform robotic surgeries.

"Patients who undergo robotic surgery usually experience a faster recovery time and return to normal activities," Amy Lloyd, MD, the Mayo Clinic physician who performed the 1,000th surgery, told the Tribune. "Also, patients may experience less blood loss and pain, reduced risk of infection at the incision site, and minimal scarring than they would with other surgical methods."
