Physician builds success with robotic surgery: 4 numbers to know

Robotics

An orthopedic surgeon at Meeker-based Colorado Advanced Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Spine at Pioneers Medical Center has reported positive outcomes using a joint replacement robot.

Kevin Borchard, MD, uses the Mako SmartRobotics system, and the technology was installed three years ago, according to a March 16 news release. Knee replacements made up 21 percent of his cases in 2021, and almost all of them employed the robot.

Four things to know:

1. In 2021, Dr. Borchard's patients could walk an average 561 feet before discharge, according to data from Stryker.

2. One-hundred percent of his patients are discharged to go home and work with outpatient physical therapy instead of at inpatient rehabilitation centers, according to the release.

3. None of his patients are readmitted to a hospital at the 30- and 90-day marks after surgery.

4. Dr. Borchard has zero orthopedic surgical site infections, according to the release.
