Kenneth Akizuki, MD, is set to perform elbow surgery on Chicago White Sox pitcher Drew Thorpe on Sept. 7.
The procedure is to shave down a bone spur in Mr. Thorpe's right elbow, and will take place at Golden State Orthopedics in San Francisco, according to a Sept. 1 news release.
The surgery will cause Mr. Thorpe to miss the remainder of the 2024 MLB season. He is expected to be without restrictions by the start of next season.
Mr. Thorpe has not pitched since July 31, dealing with a right forearm flexor strain, the release said.
Dr. Akizuki is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in platelet rich plasma injections, cartilage MACI and Tommy John Surgery. He serves as the team physician for the San Francisco Giants, another MLB, and is the former president of the MLB Team Physicians Association.
