Orthopedic surgeons billed an average of $9,809,514 to commercial payers in 2023, according to AMN Healthcare's 2024 "Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives" report.
The AMN report tracks annual billing by physicians across 18 medical specialties to commercial payers.
On average, specialists billed $3.8 million annually to commercial payers. For orthopedics surgeons, that number was much higher. Orthopedic surgeons billed more money than any other physician speciality, and they trailed only behind general surgeons, who billed nearly $12 million in 2023.
