Meet the surgeons who provide care for the 10 most popular MLB teams


The New York Yankees have been named the most popular Major League Baseball team for 2023, according to a survey from YouGov.

The site determined team popularity based on the percentage of people who have a positive opinion of the baseball team. 

Meet the surgeons who provide care for players on the 10 most popular MLB teams in 2023: 

1. New York Yankees: Christopher Ahmad, MD, a sports medicine specialist, is the head team physician for the Yankees. He has been working with the team since 2008, regularly dealing with sprains, fractures, soreness, pulls, bruises, ligament tears and other injuries. Dr. Ahmad owns his own practice in New York City. 

2. Chicago Cubs: Stephen Gryzlo, MD, is the head orthopedist for the Cubs. He has served as the team orthopedist for the last 19 years. He is also a professor of orthopedic surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. He specializes in orthopedic sports medicine with a secondary specialization in shoulder and elbow surgery.

3. Los Angeles Dodgers: Neal ElAttrache, MD, is the head team physician for the Dodgers. He practices at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles and is recognized for treatment and research of knee, shoulder and elbow injuries. He has been identified as one of the "Top 50 Most Powerful in LA Sports" by the Los Angeles Daily News and "The 100 most powerful people in MLB" by USA Today.

4. Atlanta Braves: Gary Lourie, MD, has served as the orthopedic hand surgeon for the Braves for over 20 years and completed a three-year stint as head team physician. He specializes in hand and elbow surgery, orthopedic trauma and pediatric orthopedics. He works as a surgeon at Atlanta-based Hand & Upper Extremity Center of Georgia. 

5. Boston Red Sox: Peter Asnis, MD, is the head team orthopedic surgeon for the Red Sox. He also serves as head team physician for NHL team the Boston Bruins and NFL team the New England Patriots. He practices at Boston-based Sports Medicine Service at Massachusetts General Hospital. He specializes in knee arthroscopy, ACL tears, knee ligament injuries and sports injuries. 

6. New York Mets: Kathryn McElheny, MD, is head team physician for the New York Mets, serving as the first female head team physician in franchise history. She is an attending physician at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City specializing in sports medicine. She treats athletes of all ages, including pediatric patients. 

7. St. Louis Cardinals: Shalen Kouk, MD, and Matthew Steffes, MD, serve as team orthopedists for the Cardinals. Dr. Kouk has been on staff with the Cardinals since 2023. He specializes in Tommy John surgeries in baseball players. He has experience caring for athletes at all levels, from high school to professional. He works at St. Louis-based Mercy Clinic Orthopedics. Dr. Steffes specializes in shoulder, elbow, hip and knee injuries in patients of all ages. He also works at Mercy Clinic. Previously, he worked with the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. 

8. Philadelphia Phillies: Michael Ciccotti, MD, has served as head physician for the Phillies for over 25 years. He is a surgeon at Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopaedics specializing in sports medicine. Previously, he served as president of the Major League Baseball Team Physicians Association and as orthopedic sports medicine consultant for the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team, Philadelphia Eagles football team and Philadelphia Flyers hockey team. 

9. Chicago White Sox: The White Sox have several team orthopedists, including Bernard Bach, MD, Charles Bush-Joseph, MD, Brian Cole, MD, Brian Forsythe, MD, Grant Garrigues, MD, and Gregory Nicholson, MD. The team also has six team physicians. 

10. Cincinnati Reds: Andrew Razzano, DO, stepped into the role of team orthopedic surgeon with the Reds in 2023. He is a surgeon at Beacon Orthopaedics in Miamisburg, Ohio, specializing in sports medicine and the treatment of knee, shoulder and elbow injuries. He specializes in minimally invasive procedures and also serves as medical director for Mason High School.
