The 3 levels of spine leadership

Featured Insights

Spine surgeons should approach leadership with a quiet confidence and an understanding of three different areas they have to take charge, Philip Louie, MD, of Seattle-based Virginia Mason Medical Center.

Dr. Louie discussed what makes a spine leader great.

Question: What traits make a great spine leader?

Dr. Philip Louie: I want to approach this question from three levels: big picture to personal.

1. Big picture: Advocates for patients, spine care providers, and the specialty as whole

Our ability to care for patients effectively is predicated by the forces of our spine healthcare landscape. An advocate who is willing to engage with other leaders with a seat at the table will prevent our field from being served on the table.

2. Local level: A patient centered clinical expertise that is also balanced with the ability to inspire and motivate a team, fostering a collaborative culture — resulting in retention, growth and innovation.

Patients are the center of all of our decisions. The ongoing devotion to caring for patients in the clinic and in the operating room are critical. The spine leaders who continue to spend time in the front lines and work in the trenches have the greatest ability to understand the greatest areas of concern/need within their departments and organizations. Understanding some of the day-to-day activities, struggles, and rewards are critical to driving forward the vision and mission of that department.

3. Personal level: Unwavering resilience and perseverance that is “quiet” in nature.

One factor that I’ve always appreciated in stellar orthopedic leaders is the ability to put their head down and work quietly towards goals, rather than always serving as an incessant loud voice. I think we all recognize and appreciate the quiet confidence rather than the “loudness” of insecurities that often prevail. As children, we are taught that actions speak louder than words. This principle rings even truer when leading.
