At least 2 deaths linked to tainted bone graft

Biologics

A Michigan woman died from tuberculosis linked to tainted bone graft, The Detroit News reported Aug, 18.

She received the bone graft during an elective spinal surgery in April and died in August after being treated for a postsurgical tuberculosis infection, the report said.

Her bone graft, from Aziyo Biologics, is under investigation by the CDC after at least two other people died after receiving the product. It was not clear if her death was included in the CDC's count as of Aug. 11.

Aziyo Biologics recalled its viable bone matrix in July. The infected products come from a single donor that were shipped to seven states between Feb. 27 and June 20, according to the CDC. At least 36 patients were treated with the bone grafts.
