4 things to know about mesenchymal stromal cells in spine

Biologics

Mesenchymal stromal cells have shown promise for regenerative medicine, according to the Journal of Orthopaedics. They may improve spinal fusion.

Here are four things to know.

1. MSCs are non-blood adult multipotent cells that originate from various adult tissues, including bone marrow, adipose tissue, periosteum and skeletal muscle.

2. MSCs can be harvested from bone marrow, adipose tissue and other areas, allowing for autologous transplantation of these cells into the area of degeneration or injury.

3. While the control of MSC survival and differentiation has proved to be challenging, genetic engineering allows MSCs to express the growth factors needed to specify differentiation and tissue reconstruction.

4. MSCs can improve osteogenesis.
