Biologics

Surgeons attending the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 2018 Annual Meeting in New Orleans March 6 to 10 can expect to discuss biologics and opioids, according to Medscape.

Here are five insights:

1. Physicians from Philadelphia-based The Rothman Institute will present a study on the effectiveness of oxycodone, ibuprofen and acetaminophen for pain management after carpal tunnel surgery.

2. The Rothman Institute also studied if preoperative opioid counseling had an impact on opioid consumption after hand surgery.

3. A team from Cleveland Clinic will present their study on the cost and efficacy of offering stem cell therapies for musculoskeletal conditions.

4. Researchers from South Korea will present their findings of the first clinical trial of an intratendinous injection of autologous adipose tissue-delivered mesenchymal stem cells to treat rotator cuff disease.

5. Other studies being present at the annual meeting include:

• Fluoroscopy field radiation scatter in patients with orthopedic hardware

• Long-term follow up of patients whose acetabular labral tears appear on MRI without having symptoms

• Concerns of surgeons operating on patients concurrently

• Whether hip surgery can alleviate back pain
