Short lengths of stay associated with better ALIF outcomes, study finds

Spine

Anterior lumbar interbody fusion patients who have lengths of stay less than 45 hours saw better outcomes, according to a study published in the International Journal of Spine Surgery.

A single-surgeon database was evaluated for patients who had single-level ALIF, according to the study published Dec. 1. Two cohorts, patients with lengths of stay under 45 hours and patients with lengths of stay at least 45 hours, were reviewed. Patient-reported outcomes were measured preoperatively, at six weeks, 12 weeks, six months, one year and two years.

Fifty-two patients were included in each cohort. Patients with longer lengths of stay reported worse scores on the Oswestry Disability Index at six weeks and 12-item short form physical composite scores at 12 weeks.

Patients with shorter lengths of stay had better rates on patient-reported outcome measures and minimum clinically important difference scores.
