The importance of preventive orthopedic care

Orthopedic

As orthopedic surgeons prepare for a busy 2025, there is one word that they help will lead care forward in 2025: prevention.

As innovation continues through the growth of artificial intelligence and robotics, it remains important for surgeons to remember old techniques as well, such as education and preventive care.

Ask Orthopedic Surgeons is a weekly series of questions posed to orthopedic surgeons around the country about clinical, business and policy issues affecting spine care. Becker's invites all orthopedic surgeon and specialist responses.

Question: What is one word that will define orthopedics in 2025?

Hrayr Basmajian, MD. Orthopedic Surgeon at Pomona (Calif.) Valley Hospital Medical Center: Prevention. After years of innovation and improvements in outcome, much of orthopedics is realizing that prevention appears to be one of the best treatments. This comes to us and helps our patients in two ways. The first appears to be in education and prevention of injuries and chronic modifiable conditions. Many hospitals, associations and groups are partnering to perform outreach and education to patients on how to prevent certain injuries. Sometimes that is in the form of public service announcements, or other times with online education. But either way, orthopedic providers are realizing that we need to be part of this.

The second is a very exciting one, and that comes out to prevention of complications. There are a multitude of exciting advancements that are being developed to prevent infections. Some involve implant impregnation; others involve additives or techniques. But overall, 2025 will hopefully bring much of this innovation to the public market and allow our patients to benefit from all of the hard work researchers have put into this.
