New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery launched a clinical trial that will evaluate the efficacy of concentrated bone marrow aspirate as an addition to ACL revision surgery.
The randomized trial aims to determine if concentrated bone marrow aspirate can prevent chronic inflammation and osteoarthritis in ACL revision patients, according to a May 20 news release. Past research suggests that concentrated bone marrow aspirate could improve surgical outcomes but it hasn't been studied in rigorous clinical trials yet.
The concentrated bone marrow aspirate in the study will come from the patient's own pelvic bones.
The Center for Regenerative Medicine at Hospital for Special Surgery is leading the trial, and Emory University in Atlanta will serve as a sub-site for research.
