Vizient explores strategies to maintain musculoskeletal procedure volume

Healthcare performance improvement company Vizient is examining strategies to retain its volume in musculoskeletal procedures as sites of care shift.

Vizient is predicting a continued shift of musculoskeletal procedures into the outpatient setting, according to an Aug. 29 press release. In response, the latest edition of Vizient's triannual publication featured articles highlighting strategies providers can employ to mitigate loss.

Elective shoulder replacement procedures are expected to grow by 91 percent, with outpatient procedures being predicted to take up 93 percent of the market share. Inpatient providers can attract more payer-driven business by implementing ambulatory strategies for procedures that traditionally require a greater length of stay, according to the release.

Vizient also advised that healthcare providers could also stay relevant in the musculoskeletal market by evaluating the local demand for spinal cord stimulation, which has proven effective in reducing chronic pain for which opioids were traditionally prescribed.

Self-monitoring analysis and reporting technology devices are also expected to become increasingly important when it comes to maintaining market share.
