'Forward-thinking and future-focused': Dr. Matthew Harb on the culture of orthopedics

Orthopedic

Orthopedics is a specialty known for its innovative technology, techniques and protocols.

Matthew Harb, MD, orthopedic surgeon at the Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics in Bethesda, Md., connected with Becker's to answer, "How would you describe the culture of orthopedics?"

Note: This response has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Dr. Matthew Harb: The culture of orthopedics is very forward-thinking and future-focused. Overall, we are dedicated to advancing the specialty, with a focus on technology and techniques to improve patient care and to push the field forward. This can be more recently seen with advances in minimally invasive surgical techniques, same-day joint replacement surgery and rapid recovery protocols. To continue to innovate, orthopedic surgeons must commit to educating the next generation of surgeons. As a hip and knee surgeon myself, I think it's very important to pass on everything I've learned to equip the next generation of surgeons with the knowledge to improve future patient outcomes.
