Dr. Lyle Cain: Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to undergo operation

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Lyle Cain, MD, announced that surgery was scheduled Nov. 18 for Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who dislocated his right hip during a Nov. 16 game, Tuscaloosanews.com and ESPN report.

Dr. Cain, the team's orthopedic surgeon and a provider at Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Ala., said in a statement that Mr. Tagovailoa will miss the rest of the season but is expected to make a full recovery.

The junior quarterback was carted off the field in the second quarter of Alabama's game against Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss., then airlifted to Birmingham for CT scans and MRIs. He was later flown to Houston for surgery.

The Nov. 18 surgery will be Mr. Tagovailoa's second operation this season; he had surgery Oct. 20 on his right ankle, which had been injured during a game against Tennessee.

Mr. Tagovailoa is a Heisman Trophy contender and possible top-10 pick in next spring's NFL draft. He ended the season with 33 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Update: The University of Alabama Athletics released the following update from Dr. Cain on Nov. 18: "Tua underwent successful surgery on his right hip Monday morning in Houston. The procedure went as planned, and he is resting comfortable. Tua's prognosis is excellent, and we expect him to make a full recovery. He will return to Tuscaloosa in the next several days to begin his rehab."
