NYU Langone launches 2 new sports centers, names leaders

New York City-based NYU Langone Health launched two new sports centers — one geared toward women and one designed to treat young athletes.

Cordelia W. Carter, MD, will lead the new Center for Women's Sports Health. The center's team will include physicians specializing in areas including sports medicine, orthopedic surgery, rehabilitation, gynecology, endocrinology, nutrition and cardiology.

The center will also offer diagnosis and management for female athlete triad syndrome, which can lead to the absence of menstrual periods, low bone mass and low energy.

"We know there are differences in how women and men experience sports injuries — physiological differences that can lead to higher rates of certain injuries like [anterior cruciate ligament] tears, but also disparities in how physicians address women's reported pain," Dr. Carter said in a press release.

In addition, Dr. Carter will co-direct the new Center for Young Athletes alongside Dennis A. Cardone, DO. As part of New York City-based Hassenfeld Children's Hospital at NYU Langone, the Center for Young Athletes will offer treatment for common sports injuries, as well as conditions unique to children.

"Children who play sports face new health challenges that we weren't seeing 10 or 15 years ago, particularly with the rise of specialization in one sport year-round," Dr. Cardone said.

Both centers will offer educational resources and conduct research to improve treatment models for all athletes.
