Allen Sills, MD, and NFL executive Jeff Miller are looking to make the NFL a safer place, and to do so they've gone back to school, My Journal Courier reports.

What you should know:

1. Dr. Sills and Mr. Miller spent June 17-18 in Indianapolis sharing data on injury prevention and treatment with the NCAA.

2. The NFL hopes this is the beginning of a fruitful relationship between the two leagues and that this relationship leads to improved injury prevention.

"I think we hope this is the start of even more regular interaction between the two organizations because we share the exact same goals, which is improving the health and safety of players," said Dr. Sills.

3. The NFL's competition committee regularly consults the league's medical team about pending changes. Mr. Miller believes the competition committee has changed around 60 rules in an effort to make the game safer.

4. Dr. Sills and Mr. Miller said that while work is continuing to decrease the number of concussions in the game, they believe the growing number of lower-body injuries is an increasing threat to the players.
