Michael Joyce, MD, arthroscopically removed a "loose body" in the left knee of Seattle Storm point guard Sue Bird May 30, The Seattle Times reports.

What you should know:

1. Ms. Bird will be out indefinitely.

2. Ms. Bird said she had played with the loose piece of bone for up to eight to 10 years before she decided to have it surgically removed.

3. Dr. Joyce is an orthopedic surgeon at Glastonbury, Conn.-based Saint Francis Hospital.

4. He is an orthopedic consultant for the UConn Athletic Department and a team physician for the New Britain Rock Cats.
