Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez injured his right ulnar collateral ligament Feb. 27 and will seek a second opinion from Neal ElAttrache, MD, the team reports.

Three things to know:

1. Dr. ElAttrache is an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon at Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute.

2. Mr. Perez played in one Cactus League game this spring, serving as the designated hitter Feb. 26 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

3. Typically, patients who seek second opinions at Kerlan-Jobe have torn UCLs and require Tommy John surgery, which would keep Mr. Perez out until 2020, ESPN baseball columnist Jeff Passan tweeted. Mr. Perez is owed $36 million over three years.
