NuVasive Reimagines Cervical Spine Surgery with New C360 Portfolio

Spine

While the cervical spine market is well established, continued innovation within the segment has been limited, creating an opportunity to address challenges and enable surgeons to customize treatment to patient needs, versus the traditional one-size-fits-all approach.

Current technology for the cervical spine does not adequately address the unique needs of varying patients’ pathologies and treatments. When choosing a cervical plate, surgeons are limited to standard profiles that are not optimized for the pathology at hand. Thicker plates, while appropriate for longer constructs and alignment preservation, are often unnecessary for shorter constructs and can result in negative outcomes such as dysphagia.1 Conversely, thinner plates on the market are often unable to provide the versatility of fixed, variable or hybrid plate constructs, and may cause malalignment. When accounting for these nuances and designing for them, there is additional opportunity to innovate for improved patient quality of life. Both surgeons and patients may benefit from a procedural solution that is comprehensive and versatile.

As the leader in spine technology innovation, NuVasive saw an opportunity to procedurally-integrate technology to support the cervical spine—as it did with X360® to the lateral spine surgery space—to optimize the surgeon experience and advance care in the operating room. The NuVasive C360™ portfolio—the C stands for Cervical and the 360 refers to comprehensive, procedurally integrated solutions—was introduced today to surgeons globally.

NuVasive, alongside a team of world-renowned spinal thought leaders, assessed the challenges of cervical spine surgery to provide more choices to surgeons as they treat their patients. The C360 portfolio includes new anterior and posterior fixation solutions and integrates them with best-in-class access instrumentation, implants, enabling technologies and biologic materials into a procedural solution for the cervical spine.

The first product introduced in the C360 portfolio is the NuVasive Anterior Cervical Plate (ACP). The ACP was developed to give surgeons a wide array of implant options to provide an optimized system designed to address a wide variety of patient pathologies. The system consists of three plate profiles to not only offer an ultra-thin plate system, but also to give surgeons an optimized balance between profile and stiffness, depending on the levels of each construct. The 1.6 mm ACP is the thinnest plate on the market2 and was designed to provide a profile and contour to help reduce dysphagia in one-to-two-level spine surgery. The 1.9 mm ACP is an ultra-thin plate that accepts both fixed and variable screws for one to three levels, providing exceptional construct versatility and choice for the surgeon and patient needs. For longer constructs, where additional stiffness is needed for spinal alignment preservation, the 2.1 mm ACP was designed to maximize the strength of the plate without compromising on profile.

When combined with the NuVasive Advanced Material Science™ (AMS) interbody portfolio, surgeons have a comprehensive offering to meet the needs of all patient pathologies in the cervical spine. The unique design of our Porous PEEK™ and Modulus® 3D-printed titanium interbodies offers radiographic advantages and allows for the bony integration required for a stable fusion. The interplay between the plate and interbody is central to alignment and dynamic loading, and ultimately, to how surgeons reimagine a new ACDF procedural solution.

In 2021, NuVasive will continue to innovate and expand the C360 portfolio with a posterior cervical fixation system, Reline® Cervical.3 Expanding on the successful design principles of the Reline thoracolumbar fixation system, Reline Cervical is designed not only for efficiency and ease of use, but also as a system to address the most complex junctional challenges. This comprehensive system will provide solutions for pathologies from degenerative cases to complex deformity.

The introduction of the C360 portfolio demonstrates NuVasive’s commitment to deliver a procedurally integrated cervical platform that helps improve current challenges in the operating room and is a testament to the Company’s mission to transform surgery, advance care and change lives.
