Here are 10 spine and neurosurgeons making headlines this week.

Anthony Yeung, MD, of the Desert Institute of Spine Care in Phoenix, and Kai-Uwe Lewandrowski, MD, of the Center for Advanced Spine Care of Southern Arizona in Tucson, examined the early management of spinal diseases and whether early intervention can reduce long-term disability associated with them.

Paul Matz, MD, a neurosurgeon with Cheyenne-based Wyoming Neurosurgery and Spine, spoke to Becker's Spine Review about the recent North American Spine Society clinical guidelines.

The trial began for Santa Rosa, Calif.-based neurosurgeon Thomas Keller, MD, who faces a potential prison term of 60 years to life for allegedly causing four patient deaths by overprescribing opioids.

Munish Gupta, MD, of St. Louis-based Washington University School of Medicine spoke to Becker's  about the spine surgery textbook he recently released and the future of spinal deformity care.

Jordan Amadio, MD, removed a tapeworm from a man's brain in a rare neurosurgical procedure. A brain scan revealed the tapeworm, which the man may have contracted from eating food contaminated with tapeworm eggs.

Fred Naraghi, MD, of Comprehensive Spine Center in San Francisco is moving his practice to Klamath Falls, Ore., in February. He spoke to Becker's about what prompted the upcoming move and how he sees cervical artificial disc replacement and spinal fusion developing in spine.

Park Ridge, Ill.-based The Spine Center welcomed its fourth surgeon, Steven Fineberg, MD, who specializes in complex and minimally invasive cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine surgery.

Kaixuan Liu, MD, PhD, shared his insight on laser spine surgery, which he believes will not live up to its hype for treating spinal disorders that cause chronic back pain.

The first procedure with Osseus Fusion Systems' Aries-L Titanium Spinal Implant was performed by Samuel Joseph Jr., MD, of Tampa-based Joseph Spine Institute.
