Former neurosurgeon Dr. Johnny Delashaw asks court to drop restrictions on medical license

Spine

Attorneys for former neurosurgeon at Seattle-based Swedish Medical Center Johnny Delashaw, MD, argued in court that restrictions placed on their client's medical license by the Washington Medical Commission be dropped, reports The Seattle Times.

Six things to know:

1. Dr. Delashaw aims to remove restrictions set by the commission when it reinstated his license in July 2018. He resigned his post at Swedish Neuroscience Institute in Seattle before the suspension was set.

2. He filed a complaint in December, alleging that five members of the commission "violated his constitutional rights, interfered with his expectancy to be able to practice neurosurgery and defamed him."

3. Dr. Delashaw's attorneys argued that too much unrelated evidence about his character was admitted into the state commission's investigation, violating his due process.

4. The commission suspended Dr. Delashaw's license following a series of articles published in The Seattle Times that questioned his leadership after a nurse accused him of disruptive behavior.

5. Dr. Delashaw claims that he has been unable to find a job as a physician due to the restrictions but lawyers for the Washington Medical Commission assert that the investigation and restrictions are fair.

6. A decision is expected to be reached by Judge James Dixon of Thurston County Superior Court in around 10 days.
