Spine

Mark McLaughlin, MD, of Princeton Brain & Spine in Princeton, N.J., offers four key ways that neurosurgeons can avoid burnout, according to Business Insider.

His four tips are:

Partnerships — research has shown that productive mentorship guards against burnout and having great mentors can provide comfort during difficult periods.

Productive pause — as Dr. McLaughlin's life coach puts it: A productive pause is "a short period of focused reflection around specific questions that leads to clarity of action and peace of mind."

Curiosity — don't stop educating yourself. Dr. McLaughlin believes learning whether from reading, internet research, podcasts, trade shows or engaging in deep conversation, can lead to happiness.

Stewardship — Dr. McLaughlin is a firm believer that sharing and helping others be their best leads to an effective and happy life.

Dr. McLaughlin is a board-certified neurosurgeon, specializing in cranial conditions and specific spine disorders and is an international speaker and author for brain and spinal cord injuries.
