The American Association of Neurological Surgeons named Christopher Shaffrey, MD, president, according to Newswise.
Five things to know:
1. Dr. Shaffrey became the chief of the Duke Spine division for the departments of neurological surgery and orthopedic surgery in July 2018 after spending 10 years as the Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia. He was also director of the neurosurgery spine division.
2. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Shaffrey focuses on research with more than 450 peer-reviewed publications and 1,000 national and international presentations. He also spent time as the deputy editor of Spine and Spine Deformity.
3. Prior to becoming president of AANS, Dr. Shaffrey served as chair of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a member of the neurosurgery residency review committee.
4. Dr. Shaffrey earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia, where he also completed neurosurgical and orthopedic residencies. Dr. Shaffrey then underwent a spine fellowship in pediatric and adult reconstructive spine surgery.
5. During his career, Dr. Shaffrey has served as a staff member at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and at the University of Washington in Seattle.
