University Hospitals adds endoscopic spine surgery

Spine

Cleveland-based University Hospitals began offering endoscopic spine surgery, according to a Jan. 23 news release.

Xiaofei (Sophie) Zhou, MD, brought endoscopic spine surgery to the hospital after completing a training course. Dr. Zhou used Arthrex technology to complete the hospital's first endoscopic discectomy in January.

Endoscopic spine surgery allows surgeons to operate through one small incision, has little to no blood loss and can lead to faster recoveries.

"This type of surgery is the future. Adopting this at UH and training our residents in it sets them up for success in their own careers," Dr. Zhou said in the release.
