Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. James Harrop of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital

James Harrop, MD, is a spine surgeon at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Dr. Harrop has been in practice for 19 years, according to the hospital's website. He treats conditions including spinal tumors, spinal cord injury and scoliosis. He also works in the department of neurosurgery.

He received his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University, completed an internship and residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals and completed a fellowship at Cleveland Clinic.

Although he grew up in a family of health professionals, he went to college planning to be an actuary, according to a video profile. Towards the end of college, he realized he enjoyed the personal aspect of medicine and spent time working in a hospital.
