Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. A. Jay Khanna of Johns Hopkins Medicine

A. Jay Khanna, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon at Johns Hopkins Health Care and Surgery Center in Bethesda, Md.

Dr. Khanna is a professor of orthopedic surgery and biomedical engineering at the Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he is also the vice chair of professional development for the orthopedic surgery department. He performs minimally invasive spine surgery and complex spinal reconstructions.

Dr. Khanna received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C, completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and underwent spine surgery fellowship training in the neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery departments at the Cleveland Clinic Spine Institute. He serves as the course director for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Board Review Course and teaches and directs several other CME courses for spine surgeons. Dr. Khanna previously served as the clinical director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Biomedical Engineering, Innovation and Design in Baltimore.

His research interests include the evaluation of clinical and functional spine surgery outcomes, spine surgery complications, spinal imaging and spine biomechanics. Dr. Khanna has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, and edited the textbooks "MRI Essentials for the Spine Specialist" and "MRI for Orthopaedic Surgeons."
