The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London is the first National Health Service hospital in the U.K. to install the Orbeye 4K-3D Microscope, med-technews.com reported Jan. 21.

Medical device manufacturer Olympus America designed Orbeye for spine and neurosurgery procedures.

The device transmits HD images of the patient's anatomy on a monitor in the operating room for the entire surgical team to see. Clear images of the structural and surrounding tissue, tumors and blood vessels can be seen in real-time.

Orbeye 4K-3D provides added value during the COVID-19 pandemic as surgeons can use the device while wearing full personal protective equipment, Dr. Hani Marcus, consultant neurosurgeon at the hospital, told the publication. "This will allow patients to continue to benefit from less invasive surgery, which will mean less pain, a shorter stay in hospital and more rapid recovery from surgery."

Over the next five years, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery will collaborate with Olympus America to improve the technology and integrate it into research projects such as artificial intelligence and robotics.
